When the bombs fell, our house was left standing. It was one of the few on the street that remained. Our neighbours were long gone, and so they didn’t see theirs give its last exhale, collapse into blackened timber with its ribs pointing to the sky – but from the outside, ours seemed completely untouched. 

 

Still, as the days passed, the wounds began to reveal themselves.
